# Smithy > Smithy is AI-powered CAD for manufacturers. Their customers sketch a part, photograph it, or just describe it, and Smithy builds a parametric, manufacturable STEP file the shop can quote. It runs on the manufacturer's own website, tuned to that shop's processes, materials, and capabilities. ## The problem it solves Manufacturers lose quotable work to requests that never become CAD: hand sketches, phone photos, PDF drawings, and "can you make one of these?" emails. Smithy turns those into parametric models, so an unquotable request becomes a quote. The person making the request needs no CAD experience. ## Ways a part gets created - Text: describe the part in plain language - Image: upload a photo of a part or a drawing - Sketch: upload a hand sketch - Revisions: describe a change and Smithy updates the part - Direct edits: click a dimension on the model and type a new value - Measurement: select any face to measure it ## Part types - Sheet metal: flat and bent parts, with the shop's materials and bend radii built in - Mill: three-axis operations - Lathe: symmetric profiles with secondary operations - Tube: the shop's extrusion profiles with secondary operations ## Output - Parametric models with real, editable dimensions and full feature history - not frozen meshes - Industry-standard STEP files, built to the shop's process capabilities and ready for manufacturing - Most parts build in 10-30 seconds; edits apply in real time ## Business model Smithy is licensed to manufacturers as a tool deployed on their own websites. Smithy is not a marketplace and not a fabrication shop - it does not cut, bend, coat, or ship parts. The manufacturer running Smithy is the one who quotes and produces the work. ## Links - [Homepage](https://smithycad.com/): product overview, capabilities, and partnership details - [Try the demo](https://app.smithycad.com): free to use, nothing to install - describe or upload a part and get a STEP file - [Talk to sales](https://smithycad.com/contact): tell us about your shop and what your customers ask for; replies within 1 business day - Email: hello@smithycad.com ## Company SmithyCAD, Inc.
